South Yorkshire CU Schools Conference 2024: A day of inspiration and collaboration
The South Yorkshire Children’s University Schools Conference brought together educators, students, and CU centres from Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, and newly-joined Barnsley for an inspiring day dedicated to sharing practice and celebrating all things CU!
The conference kicked off with an exploration of the GOALS secondary pilot program, highlighting its positive impact on secondary students. Attendees were treated to presentations showcasing innovative approaches to overcoming challenges and promoting student participation in various activities. The commitment and creativity of school staff were evident as they shared success stories and strategies for developing enriching educational experiences tailored to their pupils’ needs.
A highlight of the afternoon session was the preview of the “Think Climate” project in a box, set to launch next academic year. This initiative aims to engage students in environmental education through hands-on, collaborative activities. School staff also had the opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas, fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared purpose.
One of the most anticipated moments was a special performance by the Hilltop sign and sign choir, who left the audience spellbound. The conference also featured moving testimonies from CU ambassadors, including eloquent speakers from Gawber Primary. These students brought the CU experience to life, sharing personal stories that underscored the transformative power of CU.
Special guest speakers Sonjia Peers from the CU Trust and Gemma Styles added to the day’s richness, offering insights and inspiration. Their presence, alongside support from various Learning Destinations, highlighted the collaborative effort needed to drive positive change.
A particularly poignant moment was the celebration of the four CU centres—Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, and Barnsley—coming together under the South Yorkshire CU banner for the first time. This unity marks a significant milestone, promising even greater achievements in the future.
The South Yorkshire Children’s University Schools Conference was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of collaboration, dedication, and the shared vision of empowering young people to reach their fullest potential. We can’t wait for the next one!
